Matthew Kraus

Hello! My name is Matthew Kraus and I’m a piano teacher at Resonate Music School & Studio! I’ve been enthralled by the piano since I was five years old, where my uncle would practice and perform for my family. I was drawn to the rich sound and mechanical beauty of my grandparents’ old Heintzman upright piano and immediately made my parents sign me up for lessons. I studied classical throughout grade school and found that I could learn other instruments, such as guitar, more easily with my piano skills. In an effort to diversify my musical knowledge, I studied bass guitar and record engineering at Grant MacEwan University, graduating in 2011. As it turned out, I missed the piano too much and sought out bands looking for piano and organ players. I soon realized that I was most relaxed and comfortable at the piano and would sit there for hours trying to recreate the piano parts from all my favourite songs from the 60s and 70s.

Currently, I’m playing piano and organ with my rock band, Altameda. Our debut record was released in 2016 and reached #1 on the CKUA charts, which led to us touring it extensively across Canada and the United Kingdom! Notable performances include playing alongside Sam Roberts at the Calgary Stampede, a Spring showcase tour through Wales and England, and invitations to play at Edmonton Folk Music Festival and the Salmon Arm Roots & Blues fest this past summer. In Fall 2017 we are cutting a new record that will be chock-full of hard-hitting 70s rock piano, calling back to the good old days of Elton John and Steely Dan!

My band has allowed me to visit places I never imagined I’d visit, and meet all sorts of wonderful people. Now I want to share my excitement and passion for the piano with my students to fuel their musical aspirations! Whether my students want to play with a band or just for the family, classical or contemporary, I hope to leverage my experiences to inspire the next generation of amazing pianists.
