Alex Jumpsen

Hey there, my name’s Alex and I teach drums at Resonate Music School & Studio! I’ve been playing drums since 2002 and teaching since 2009. It started for me as a way to copy my favourite rockers, and it’s turned into a lifelong pursuit that I can’t wait to share with you. For me, being a drummer means supporting the music and building a song’s emotional foundation, all while adding your own creative voice to the mix. It’s a lot of responsibility, but I believe it’s also the most fun you can have on stage!

This attitude of support and respect for the art guides my approach to teaching. I design a unique learning plan for each student based on what they want to get out of drum lessons. Whether you want to play along with your favourite songs, join a band, go down the rabbit-hole of history and technique, prepare for a university program, or just have fun with an exciting new instrument, we can do it!

By combining traditional drum education methods with my own teaching tools, I’m proud to say I’m able to work with students of all abilities.

There is no single method, but there is one goal: to foster a lifelong love of music.

My musical background is primarily in rock and traditional jazz. I also have years of experience performing funk, pop, country, Latin, and electronic/dance styles, as well as some classical percussion experience.

Outside of Resonate, I am the drummer and part-time lyricist for The Super 92 (roots, country, rock) and the director of drumming operations for DeadBeats (rock, rock, rock). When I’m away from the drums I love exploring Edmonton’s river valley, and reading history and sci-fi.

I hold a degree in education from the University of Alberta, two music diplomas from MacEwan University, and professional teaching certification from the Government of Alberta. I studied for many years with Dan Skakun (jazz guru and former student of Joe Morello and John Riley), as well as with Brian Thurgood (Edmonton Symphony Orchestra) and Roland Griffith (of Calgary rock legends Ground and Miles Silver).
